Getting started

Starting therapy should be the easy part. Here is how booking, referrals and funding work, and what to expect at your first appointment.

Four gentle steps

  1. 01

    Reach out

Book directly through my online diary, or send an enquiry — I read and reply to every message myself, promptly.

  2. 02

    Initial session

A relaxed first appointment to gently understand your history and goals. If there's a lot to cover, we may take a second session to do it properly.

  3. 03

    Shared plan

Together, we settle on an approach that feels right, and what progress should look like.

  4. 04

    Ongoing sessions

Regular, caring appointments, reviewed and adapted as things shift.

Do you need a referral?

No. You can book privately at any time, without seeing your GP first.

If you would like a Medicare rebate, book a mental health care plan appointment with your usual GP — ask for it by that name, as practices set aside time for it. Since November 2025 the plan needs to come from your usual GP or the practice where you are registered with MyMedicare. Your GP prepares a Mental Health Treatment Plan and referral, which gives you Medicare rebates for eligible sessions: up to ten individual sessions in a calendar year, released as six and then four after a review with your GP. A referral from a psychiatrist or paediatrician also works.

Two practical points: the plan must be dated on or before your first session, and we need a copy before that session. Your GP's practice usually sends it, but bring a copy in case it hasn't reached us. OneBodyMind’s guide to Medicare and referrals explains the plan, the review and the session count in more detail.

Other ways sessions can be funded

  • DVA — veterans and current serving members are welcome; mention DVA when you get in touch and I will confirm how your sessions are funded.
  • WorkCover (ReturnToWorkSA) — if your sessions relate to an accepted claim, please have your claim number and case manager's details ready.
  • CTP — after a motor vehicle accident, treatment may be funded under an accepted Compulsory Third Party claim; please have the insurer, claim number and claims consultant's details ready.
  • NDIS — I see participants who are self-managed or plan-managed. I'm not able to see NDIA-managed (agency-managed) participants. More about using NDIS funding.
  • Private — you can always choose to pay privately, without a referral.

Fees

My fee is $290 for a standard 50-minute session, before the Medicare rebate for clinical psychology. Fees are payable on the day. If you have a Mental Health Treatment Plan, reception lodges your Medicare claim at the time, and the rebate is paid straight back to your account (claims for telehealth and after-hours sessions are lodged online and can take up to 24 business hours). Reception can confirm the current rebate amount when you book. OneBodyMind’s guide to fees and rebates explains how the rebate works.

Fees for DVA, WorkCover, CTP and NDIS sessions follow those schemes' arrangements, and medico-legal assessments and reports are quoted separately.

If you need to cancel or move an appointment, please give at least 48 hours' notice. The full cancellation and missed appointment policy is part of my terms.

Telehealth or in person

Sessions are available in person at Rose Park or by secure video call, and you're welcome to move between the two. Telehealth attracts the same Medicare rebate as an in-person session. Read more about telehealth sessions.

The practice is on the first floor, reached by one flight of stairs. If stairs are difficult for you, sessions can be held by telehealth or telephone instead.

Your first appointment

The first session is a relaxed conversation about what brings you here, your history and what you would like to change. If there is a lot to cover, we may take a second session to do it properly. Bring your Mental Health Treatment Plan if you have one, and any reports you would like me to see.

Please arrive a few minutes early; reception is hosted by OneBodyMind. What to expect at your first appointment covers arriving, parking and the first session in more detail.

Evidence-based care

Every plan I make draws on approaches with strong research support, adapted to you. If you'd like to understand what "evidence-based" means and why it matters when choosing a therapist, OneBodyMind’s guide to evidence-based therapy explains it clearly.

Quick answers

Can I book without a GP referral?

Yes. No referral is needed to book privately. A Mental Health Treatment Plan from your usual GP (or a referral from a psychiatrist or paediatrician) is only needed if you want a Medicare rebate.

How many Medicare-rebated sessions can I have?

Up to ten individual sessions in a calendar year with a Mental Health Treatment Plan: six to start, then four more after a review with your GP.

Do you see NDIS participants?

Yes, if you are self-managed or plan-managed. I am not able to see NDIA-managed participants.

Is telehealth covered by Medicare?

Yes. Telehealth sessions attract the same Medicare rebate as in-person sessions.

How much is a session?

$290 for a standard 50-minute session, before the Medicare rebate for clinical psychology. With a GP Mental Health Treatment Plan, the rebate is claimed for you on the day.

What is the cancellation policy?

Please give at least 48 hours' notice. Cancellations with 24 to 48 hours' notice attract 50% of the standard fee, and less than 24 hours' notice or non-attendance the full fee. Exemptions may apply for genuine emergencies.

Ready when you are

Your first step doesn't have to be a big one.

Book directly through my online diary, or send an enquiry whenever suits you — I read and reply to every message myself.
