How I help

Chronic pain, illness and injury

Living with pain or a long-term health condition affects far more than the body. Health psychology works on the stress, mood and life changes that can come with it, alongside your medical care.

What this work covers

I offer compassionate support for the psychological impact of:

  • chronic or persistent pain
  • a new diagnosis, or a long-term illness — including experiences with cancer
  • injury — including injury at work or on the road
  • the changes in role, work, relationships and identity that can follow

Pain and illness commonly bring low mood, worry, poor sleep, frustration and grief for the life you had before. These are understandable responses, not signs of weakness, and they can be worked with.

How I work

Seeing a psychologist doesn't mean your pain is imagined. The aim is to reduce how much pain or illness dominates your life, and to build ways of living well alongside it. I draw on approaches with strong research support in this area, such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), tailored to your situation and pace.

With your consent, I am happy to liaise with your GP and other treating practitioners so that your care fits together.

Injury claims

If your pain or injury is part of a WorkCover or CTP (motor vehicle) claim, treatment may be funded by the insurer. See work stress and workplace injury or after a motor vehicle accident, and mention the claim when you get in touch.

Common questions

Does seeing a psychologist mean my pain is 'in my head'?

No. Pain is real, and psychological therapy doesn't suggest otherwise. It helps with the stress, mood, sleep and life changes that so often come with persistent pain or illness.

Can you work with my GP or physiotherapist?

Yes. With your consent I can communicate with your other treating practitioners so your care is coordinated.

Is this covered by Medicare?

If your GP prepares a Mental Health Treatment Plan, Medicare rebates apply to eligible sessions. Treatment under a WorkCover or CTP claim may instead be funded by the insurer.

Ready when you are

Your first step doesn't have to be a big one.
